Traianos to return to Giants for a second season

Greek swingman Anastasios Traianos will be returning to Manchester Giants for a second season.

Traianos, 30, played in all but two of the Giants 35 games last season, only bettered by team leaders Callum Jones and Jerelle Okoro.

He contributed 25 three-pointers, including three memorable efforts in the dramatic win at Worcester Wolves.

The experienced professional will combine playing with his studies at the club’s main sponsors, University of Bolton.

Head Coach Danny Byrne said: “Anastasios is a great professional and I think last season he played in every different position for us.

“We’ll be looking to play with a bit of freedom of movement next season and even though he comes from a European league where it’s very X’s and O’s, he’s clever enough to play that.

“We know he’s a useful player that will come off the bench and shoot three-pointers when needed.”

Traianos is currently back in his homeland and last month attended an event with Greek NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo.

He said: “I’m practising hard to keep myself in good shape and to improve my weaknesses. I’ve attended a couple of international coaching clinics and other athletic development seminars.

“Last season was tough for the team. I came from a country where basketball is more tactical and needs a lot of thinking. In the UK, the game is more physical and freelance.

“I think I adjusted myself to that style. I believe that if as a team we try to combine our athleticism with tactics we will be a positive surprise in the BBL next season.”

Traianos is due back from Greece in the middle of August, just in time for pre-season which begins on August 16.
